THIS ANNOUNCEMENT IS NOT A REQUEST FOR APPLICATIONS. This announcement is to provide public notice of the National Park Service’s intention to award financial assistance for the following project activities.

The project goals are to enhance physical access and provide recreational and educational programming for students, educators and trail visitors on the James River and Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail. The project encompasses several related objectives: 1) provide teacher training for 40 educators and conduct on-water educational programming for 3,000 middle and high school students of the Hampton Road region, 2) conduct three week-long canoe expeditions for 30 high school students, 3) conduct multi-week Kids in Kayaks programs serving 350 middle school students in Richmond and at Fort Monroe National Monument, 4) conduct 25 public, guided canoe and kayak programs across the watershed, and 5) identify and plan new public access sites on the James River and its tributaries. This project has the ancillary benefit of helping NPS Chesapeake fulfill operational responsibilities related to the Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement and the Chesapeake National Historic Trail.
