Additional Information

Agency Name: National Park Service
Description:

The projects will be for a Trail Crew made up of 1 crew leader and 4 crew members for Catoctin Mountain Park, a unit of the National Park Service. This is a nine week project working with the Student Conservation Association (SCA) starting approximately September 1, 2019 and going to approximately November 2, 2019. The crew will work out of the Resource Management Division. Work is 40 hours per week.

Projects will be determined by the park staff. Projects will include rehabilitation of pedestrian foot bridges, installation of water bars and check dams to reduce trail erosion.  Numerous stone culverts need to be replaced to direct spring run-off water. Placement of new signage and the repair of any old signage. Trail tread will be reestablished where it has degraded. Trail brushing, and rehabilitation of any turnpikes that have eroded. The park has a trail blazing system that needs to be re-applied throughout the park.

The Crew leader will lead the work projects in the field, provide written reports to summarize and document work completed with photos and the crew leader. The crew leader will work with park staff on project logistics and work with the Park Volunteer Coordinator to get additional personnel for larger projects if needed.  Crew members will be taught to use a Trimble or Garmin GPS unit, if they do not have GPS skills, to further document locations of work completed.
