This grant from the Environmental Protection Department aims to develop and implement biological assessment tools for wade-able streams in eastern Alaska, specifically in Denali National Park and Preserve, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve, and Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve. The project will focus on assessing the impacts of mining and other human activities on stream ecosystems and creating a macroinvertebrate biological assessment tool tailored to the region. The goal is to establish accurate biological condition determinations at both stream reach and regional scales. Closing date for applications is August 27, 2019.

Description: | Mining and other anthropogenic activities have potentially impacted stream ecosystems across eastern Alaska, including in Denali National Park and Preserve, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve, and Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve, but there has never been a comprehensive, quantitative assessment of those impacts. The purpose of this agreement is to provide that assessment, and to create an optimal macroinvertebrate biological assessment tool for eastern Alaska for use in wade-able stream systems. We seek to develop biological assessment indices that can be applied at both the stream reach and regional scales to make accurate and precise biological condition determinations. |
