U.S. Department of Energy: Intermediate Neutrino Research Grant Program

Collaborative applications (identical applications from multiple applicants) will not be accepted under this FOA. Instead, institutions interested in working together must submit one application from a designated lead institution with other institutions as sub-awardees.

Applicants are advised that:
• Individual applicants are unlikely to possess the skills, abilities, and resources to successfully accomplish the objectives of this FOA. Individual applicants are encouraged to address this concern in their applications and to demonstrate how they will accomplish the objectives of this FOA.
• Technical expertise in this field of scientific research is unlikely to exist outside institutions of higher education.

We are interested in research that would align with the goals of the Intensity Frontier Program (http://science.energy.gov/hep/research/intensity-frontier/) in investigating the properties and interactions of the known neutrinos and in searching for new types of neutrinos, as part of our implementation of the strategic plan for the HEP program (http://science.energy.gov/~/media/hep/hepap/pdf/May%202014/FINAL_P5_Report_Interactive_060214.pdf).

Proposed experiments that are scientifically compelling, competitive within the world program, modest in cost and time-scale, and technically ready, will be considered. Overall programmatic priority and optimization will be evaluated using the criteria spelled out in the HEP strategic plan. In exceptionally strong cases, directed R&D work in support of technology needed for larger scale future neutrino experiments, and theoretical studies that can address some systematic limitations of these experiments may also be considered. Priority will be given to those efforts that can provide publishable results within a five-year time frame.
