The Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) grant aims to raise awareness and appreciation for the imperiled sagebrush ecosystem in America. Supporting 350+ species of wildlife, this grant focuses on educating the public and fostering stewardship, with an emphasis on engaging youth. By highlighting the biological importance of this ecosystem and potential threats to species like pygmy rabbits and sage thrashers, this initiative seeks to prevent future ESA listing petitions. Applications are open until August 30, 2016.

| Description: | Sagebrush is the most widely distributed vegetation in the West. Since the 19th century, the sagebrush ecosystem, which has been long undervalued, has become one of the most imperiled ecosystems in America. The general public is just starting to understand the biological importance of this ecosystem that supports 350+ species of wildlife. If the condition of sagebrush is not restored, some of these species, such as pygmy rabbit, sage thrasher, the Brewer’s sparrow and sagebrush lizard, could be the subject of future Endangered Species Act (ESA) listing petitions. Today, the dialog among the members of the public and state/federal agencies regarding the potential listing of greater sage-grouse under the ESA has brought additional attention to the state of the sage-steppe ecosystem. A growing awareness and appreciation for this remarkable place and its values is an important first step in fostering lasting stewardship of this uniquely American landscape, with youth being a critical audience. |
