This Department of Public Health grant aims to strengthen Liberia’s public health systems and security by focusing on disease detection, national laboratory system capacities, surveillance systems, and emergency management planning. The program will also support the development of a more robust public health workforce through training, reinforce infection prevention and control guidelines, and enhance laboratory and surveillance capacities to identify antimicrobial resistance. By implementing these activities, Liberia will improve its ability to prevent, detect, and respond to disease outbreaks and decrease the transmission of epidemic prone diseases.

| Description: | Activities supported by this program align with Global Health Security Agenda objectives to strengthen Liberia’s capacity to prevent, detect, and respond to disease outbreaks and decrease the transmission of epidemic prone diseases. This program supports activities across five strategy areas. Activities implemented to improve disease detection include bolstering national laboratory system capacities to test and confirm infectious disease agents, and strengthening surveillance systems, including linking integrated surveillance data across sectors. The continued development of national public health workforce strategies, policies, and plans and the continued development of a more robust public health workforce through bio-surveillance, events-based, and outbreak investigation training will increase Liberia’s ability to adhere to International Health Regulations. Activities reinforcing and further developing emergency management planning, communication, and response capacities will bolster Liberia’s ability to prevent and respond to disease outbreaks and other health threats more effectively and efficiently. Activities supporting the field implementation of national infection prevention and control (IPC) guidelines and improve IPC practices and enhanced laboratory and surveillance capacities to identify antimicrobial resistance will lead to a decreased transmission of healthcare associated infections and decreased spread of antimicrobial drug resistant organisms. |
