Description: Dunes Tourism and INDU share the task of introducing visitors to the resources of Northwest Indiana, including Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. this project informs and enhances the recreational opportunities for the natural, cultural and historic resources along Lake Michigan and beyond the dunes. This project engages recipients, partners, communities and visitors in shared environmental stewardship, including natural, cultural and historical stewardship. This project also assists in the creation , promotion, facilitation and improvement of the publics understanding of natural, cultural, historic, recreational and other aspects such as ecological conservation areas, and state and local parks. In 2011, Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore moved it’s primary visitor center into the recently completed Porter County Visitor and Convention bureau building named after an environmental advocate who championed the movement to “Save the Dunes. The Dorthy Buell Visitor Center is the gateway to all the reasons to come and visit northwest Indiana, a three county area in the shadow of Chicago on Interstate 94, the major highway between Detroit and Chicago. Annually over 100,000 people stop in to plan their visit. The Park and Dunes Tourism started working together to create a space that would both protect the resources and provide visitors with an NPS class experience. The Park leases some space in the building, but Dunes Tourism generously allows park staff and some displays about the park in the public area. This project is a continuation of a long standing commitment to work together for the visiting public.
