National Park Service Museum and Archives Cataloging, Access and Preservation Grant

Youth will have an opportunity to learn and participate in park operational areas including but not limited to: natural and cultural resource management. Interns will be provided work assignments and developmental opportunities depending on their interests and abilities, so while each intern will be exposed to a specific park operational area, each intern is likely to have a slightly different experience as their roles will be defined according to their desires and the needs of the NPS and the Great Basin Institute.

B. Project Objectives â¿¿ To accomplish these goals, youth will have an opportunity to learn and participate in park operational areas including but not limited to: museum and archive preservation and management. The Zion Museum manages collections from Cedar Breaks National Monument and Bryce Canyon National Park. Projects often overlap across the parks to ensure all National Park Service collections are protected, preserved, and accessible. This project involved processing and cataloging museum and archival collections. Specifically, these young adults will conduct a park-wide archives survey at BRCA, be arranging, describing, and rehousing an estimated 90 linear feet of archival material, researching and accessioning over 50 collections, developing an online exhibit to make collections more accessible, inventorying and shipping audio and visual collections for migration, gaining experience with the Interior Collection Management System cataloging database, storing collections to meet NPS museum standards, and posting the final Finding Aids on nps.gov webpages and https://npgallery.nps.gov/zion/. The technicians will also assist with monthly tasks such as Integrated Pest Management, housekeeping, and environmental monitoring. Other duties may involve assisting the Zion Museum Curator with the Artist-in-Residence program and the annual Plein Air Art Invitational. Interns may also assist with other duties such as accessioning, updating or generating loan documentation, working with incoming research permits, answering research requests, conducting annual inventories, digitization, or assisting the museum curator with a variety of duties as they arise.
