Additional Information

Agency Name: Geological Survey
Description: The USGS National Wildlife Health Center is offering a funding opportunity to a CESU partner to assist with developing optimized Real-time Quaking Induced Conversion (RT-QuIC) assay procedures that will provide the ability to detect Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) prions from fecal and environmental samples. CWD is an invariably fatal neurodegenerative disease of cervids including elk, white-tailed deer, mule deer, and moose. Recent work has shown that CWD can significantly impact free-ranging populations, and CWD is being discovered in new regions throughout North America and new cervid species (e.g., reindeer in Norway). USGS NWHC has been tasked with exploring the use of RT-QuIC to detect CWD prions from fecal and environmental samples.
