Description: | The Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2016, directs the FRA to make grant(s) to Amtrak, as authorized by section 101(c) of the Passenger Rail Investment and Improvement Act of 2008 (PRIIA), for state-of-good-repair backlog and infrastructure improvements on Northeast Corridor (NEC) shared-use infrastructure identified in the Commission’s approved 5-year capital plan. Amtrak is identified as the only eligible recipient for these funds.
FRA and Amtrak have agreed that through this cooperative agreement, Amtrak (the Grantee) will rehabilitate and upgrade Track 22 Washington Union Station, returning the track to regular revenue service. The new platform will increase rail capacity on the run-through level at Washington Union Station and improve accessibility and the state of good repair for the second-busiest NEC station. In addition to providing future operational flexibility, the new platform also enables the Grantee to maintain rail operations during the construction of the Subbasement Project which will require outages for extended periods of time while construction takes place. |
