Additional Information

Agency Name: National Institute of Corrections
Description: Over 80% of the nation’s jails fall under the responsibility of the local sheriff for safe and effective operation.  Many of these sheriffs come from a mostly law enforcement background with limited knowledge of their responsibilities of the detention/corrections of the agency. The intended audience for this class will be graduates of the National Sheriffs’ Institute (NSI).  The curriculum will be developed with the idea of incorporating how the leadership principles acquired in the NSI are applied in the following identified areas of concern:  1) The Sheriff as a Leader, 2) Organizational Culture and the Sheriff’s Leadership, 3) Operational Philosophy, 4) Role, Purpose, and Characteristics of the Jail, 5) Liability and Standards, 6) Critical Aspects of Jail Operations: Seeing the Jail as Part of the County Government’s Agenda, 7) The Sheriff’s Leadership in Promoting Optimal Staff Performance, 8) Sheriff’s Leadership with the External Environment (communication and relationships) and 9) Where a Sheriff Should Begin. The NIC publication Sheriff’s Guide to Effective Jail Operations will be referenced as a resource and can be found at https://nicic.gov/sheriffs-guide-effective-jail-operations
