Additional Information

Agency Name: Fish and Wildlife Service
Description: The molecular basis of hatchery adaptation in Delta Smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus).
The proposed project is to conduct two studies to gain an understanding of the molecular mechanisms responsible for adaptation to captivity of Delta Smelt. The first study will evaluate genomic and epigenetic changes in historical Delta Smelt samples with low and high domestication indices to examine: 1 how rapidly hatchery adaptation has occurred and 2 which genomic regions are under selection. Domestication indices is calculated based on the number of generations an individual¿s genome has been in the hatchery. The second study will query the genome, transcriptome, and epigenome of contemporary individuals with varying DI levels learn where and how hatchery adaptation acts on a molecular level. Understanding the mechanisms behind adaptation to captivity will benefit both current protocol, population supplementation, and the ongoing design of the new Delta Smelt hatchery facilities. Authorizing Legislation: Fish and Wildlife Act; Fish and Wildlife Coordination Act; Fish and Wildlife Improvement Act; and Endangered Species Act.
