The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) offers the Brownfields Economic Development Initiative (BEDI) grant, designed to stimulate economic development. This grant specifically aids local governments and private sectors in returning brownfields sites to productive economic use. With a maximum award of $2 million, BEDI funds enhance the security or viability of a Section 108 loan guaranteed by HUD, which is used for the same brownfields economic development project. Crucially, all BEDI grants must be used in conjunction with a new Section 108-guaranteed loan commitment. This initiative aims to foster significant economic revitalization at formerly contaminated sites.

| Description: | The maximum amount of a BEDI award under this competition is $2 million per project. An application in excess of $2 million will be reduced to the extent HUD determines that such a reduction is appropriate and the project remains feasible.
BEDI funds are used to enhance the security of a loan guaranteed by HUD under Section 108 of the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974, as amended, for the same brownfields economic development project, or to improve the viability of a brownfields economic development project financed with the Section 108-guaranteed loan, in order to stimulate economic development by local governments and private sector parties at brownfields sites and to return those sites to productive economic use. All BEDI grants must be used in conjunction with a new Section 108-guaranteed loan commitment. |
