This National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) grant supports research developing task-based behavioral measures that engage brain systems relevant to anhedonia. Its goal is to identify quantitative tools for future anhedonia studies and treatment development. It funds basic experimental studies with human participants, which, while meeting NIH clinical trial criteria, focus on fundamental research. Projects involve prospectively assigning human participants to conditions and assessing outcomes to understand brain function in healthy or disordered individuals; these mechanistic studies advance foundational knowledge, rather than directly aiming for health improvement.

| Description: | This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages research to develop task-based behavioral measures that are shown to engage brain systems relevant to anhedonia using neuroimaging or other brain measures with similar spatial resolution. The goal is to identify behavioral tasks that can be used as quantitative tools in future studies of the functional constructs associated with anhedonia and in treatment development. This Funding Opportunity Announcement is for basic science experimental studies involving human participants that fall within the NIH definition of a clinical trial and also meet the definition of basic research. Types of studies that should submit under this FOA include studies that prospectively assign human participants to conditions (i.e., experimentally manipulate independent variables) and that assess biomedical or behavioral outcomes in humans for the purpose of understanding the fundamental aspects of brain function in healthy individuals or those with disorders. These mechanistic studies are expected to be responsive to the BESH FOAs https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-MH-19-006.html since they are not intended to inform on the improvement of the health status of the individual or a group of individuals either by better understanding the mechanism of action of an intervention or a measurable improvement in health. |
