Agency Name: | Environmental Protection Agency |
Description: | According to the latest data available from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 0.9 percent of children remain at risk for adverse health effects of elevated blood-lead levels (> or = to 10 ug/dl). In addressing the remaining vulnerable populations of children at risk, particularly in lowincome communities, it is important to consider a variety of approaches to reach those children who are still at risk. In order to do this, EPA would like to raise awareness about lead poisoning prevention, particularly regarding renovation, repair and painting activities. These type activities, along with deteriorating paint, are the largest contributor to childhood lead poisoning. The EPA Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) rule was developed to reduce possible exposure to lead paint and dust from these activities, and became fully effective in April 2010. However, many in the general public are still not aware of the dangers of home renovations and not even all contractors have been RRP trained and certified. |
