The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) offers the Cutting-Edge Basic Research Award (CEBRA) to support highly innovative, high-risk, and high-impact research on drug abuse and addiction. This R21 grant mechanism targets projects underrepresented in NIDA’s current portfolio that can significantly advance prevention and treatment strategies. Eligible proposals must either test a novel, significant hypothesis with scant preliminary data, promising substantial impact, or develop/adapt innovative techniques applicable to addiction research. The grant aims to foster conceptually creative studies that can transform current thinking. Approximately 14 awards, totaling $2.5 million annually, are anticipated under this program.

Description: | Purpose. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Cutting-Edge Basic Research Award (CEBRA) is designed to foster highly innovative or conceptually creative research related to drug abuse and addiction and how to prevent and treat them. It supports research that is high-risk and potentially high-impact that is underrepresented or not included in NIDA’s current portfolio. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will use the NIH Exploratory/Developmental (R21) grant mechanism with modifications. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. The total anticipated amount to be awarded is $2.5 M per year, for approximately 14 awards, contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications. |
