This DoD Peer Reviewed Cancer Synergistic Idea Award is for advancing pediatric brain tumor research, specifically encouraging studies on rare pediatric brain tumors. The grant supports innovative, synergistic approaches by two to four independent, faculty-level Principal Investigators. Projects should address central problems in pediatric brain tumor research through comprehensive tumor and host data collection. Research should align with focus areas including differentiating tumor drivers from normal brain development, developing novel tools for understanding genetic disposition, tumor initiation, and environmental factors, and assessing therapeutic intervention risks and long-term outcomes. The award seeks to accelerate progress through multidisciplinary, multi-institutional collaborations with clear plans for interaction and data sharing.

Description: | Applications for the FY09 PRCRP Synergistic Idea Award must address pediatric brain tumorswithin the field of childhood cancer. No other topic areas should be addressed in this fundingopportunity. Within the field of pediatric brain tumor studies, the study of rare pediatric braintumors is especially encouraged. Studies should include comprehensive methods for tumor datacollection and host data collection. The FY09 PRCRP Focus Areas for Pediatric Brain Tumors within the field of childhood cancerare as follows: Determining the differentiation of drivers between tumors and normal braindevelopment Developing novel tools and models for narrowing the gaps in understanding geneticdisposition, tumor initiation, and environmental factors Understanding the risks of therapeutic interventions to the host, and how these relate tolong-term outcomesFY09 DOD Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program Synergistic Idea Award 3The PRCRP seeks applications from all areas of basic, preclinical, behavioral, andepidemiological research, which should be responsive to one or more of the FY09 PRCRP FocusAreas. The Synergistic Idea Award supports innovative approaches to pediatric brain tumor researchinvolving two to four independent, faculty-level (or equivalent) Principal Investigators (PIs).These investigators should use synergistic and complementary perspectives to address a centralproblem or question in pediatric brain tumor research. This award is designed to encourage andsupport both new and pre-existing partnerships. The overall goal of this award is to accelerateadvances in pediatric brain tumor research to support the PRCRP vision of reducing the impactof pediatric brain tumors on individuals living with the disease and their families. The Synergistic Idea Award requires that investigators jointly design a single project. However, each partner will be recognized as a PI, must submit a separate application, and will receive anindividual award. The research project must be supported by the unique expertise of each PI,and it must clearly define the synergistic components that will facilitate and accelerate progressin a way that could not be accomplished through independent efforts. Multidisciplinary projectsand multi-institutional projects are highly encouraged. Each proposed study must includeclearly stated plans for interactions among all PIs and institutions involved. The plans mustinclude ongoing communication, coordination of research progress and results, and data transfer.Additionally, multi-institutional applications must provide an intellectual property plan toresolve potential intellectual and material property issues, and to remove institutional barriersthat might interfere with achieving high levels of cooperation to ensure the successfulcompletion of this award. |
