The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are offering this R01 Research Project grant. This grant is for research aimed at advancing fertility preservation beyond current technologies. Its purpose is threefold: to characterize the risks and mechanisms of gonadal damage caused by chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or occupational/environmental hazards; to identify more reliable biomarkers of reproductive capacity; and to explore the social, legal, and ethical implications of existing fertility preservation technologies. The departments anticipate committing a total of $2,000,000 in FY 2010, supporting up to five new awards.
