Additional Information

Agency Name: Geological Survey
Description: The US Geological Survey is offering a funding opportunity to conduct research on Developing methods for laboratory culture of diverse species of freshwater mussels.

The goal of this research will be to refine methods for laboratory culture unique species of juvenile freshwater mussels for use in toxicity testing (Table 1). Research projects will use these unique species of mussels to conduct water or sediment toxicity tests. Results of studies associated with this task will also be used to establish methods that can be used in inter-laboratory (ring) testing of sediments with these unique species of mussels by multiple laboratories. Methods to be evaluated for culturing the mussel species will be adapted from standard methods for conducting water toxicity tests with early life stages of mussels (ASTM 2011), and recent work conducted in USGS and university laboratories.
