Additional Information

Agency Name: National Institutes of Health
Description: The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) is soliciting grant (R01) applications to test the hypothesis that reductions in illicit drug use are associated with improved health outcomes in patients. This FOA will support both prospective and retrospective studies, which may include, but not limited to, identification and characterization of beneficial health outcomes that are associated with reduced levels of drug use. Such studies may focus on identification and or validation of strategies, methods, and tools (including biomarkers) that can assess the salutary consequences resulting from reduced use of a particular illicit drug. These objectives may be achieved either by developing new or validating currently available methodologies that will monitor a health outcome associated with changes in use of a particular illicit drug. Further, identifying health outcomes associated with changes in drug use will stimulate translational research by providing additional measures of health effects linked to drug abuse, and may also be useful in evaluating the efficacy of new therapeutic agents for treating substance use disorders (SUDs). The ultimate goal of this FOA is to provide evidence that will enable regulatory authorities to accept reductions in illicit drug use as a valid outcome measure in clinical trials of pharmacotherapies for the treatment of SUDs.
