This grant, offered by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), is for institutions proposing to determine the prevalence rate of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD), including FAS, partial FAS, and alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorders, among young children in defined U.S. geographical areas. This funding supports the Collaboration on FASD Prevalence (CoFASP), comprising multi-disciplinary teams. Awardees will utilize active case ascertainment to establish reasonable, reproducible, and generalizable FASD prevalence estimates. A key requirement is the development or use of a standardized diagnostic system to evaluate clinical characteristics. This cooperative agreement (U01) mechanism anticipates one to three awards, with direct costs ranging from $500,000 to $1.4 million annually for a five-year project period, totaling up to $2 million in awards.
