The Bureau of Land Management in Utah is offering a grant to measure methane soil flux around federal oil and gas wells in Moab, Price, and Vernal. This research aims to collect data on the impact of methane gas migration through the soil, crucial for assessing air quality and climate change effects. The grant supports the development of a system to quantify and model methane emissions, aligning with the BLM’s mandate to protect public lands and minimize atmospheric impacts as required by the Clean Air Act. Closing date for applications is September 16, 2013.

Description:: | There is little information on the process and/or magnitudes of impact from methane gas migration through the soil. Fugitive gas emissions may potentially have a significant impact on air quality and climate change. There is a need to develop a system for the collecting, quantifying and modeling of methane gas that enters the atmosphere through the soil, or flux. This data is crucial to determining the potential impacts to air quality from oil and gas development. The BLM is required to protect public lands and minimized impacts to the atmosphere as mandated by the CAA. Therefore, the intent of this assistance agreement is to measure the methane flux from the soil to the atmosphere in the vicinity of federal oil and gas wells around Moab, Price and Vernal, Utah |
