This grant initiative is offered to establish a new, dedicated breeding facility for the critically endangered Attwater’s Prairie Chicken (APC). With fewer than 50 birds remaining across three Texas coastal prairie locations, this grant is for the vital purpose of significantly increasing captive breeding efforts. Existing propagation and release programs, ongoing since the early 1990s, underscore the urgent need for expanded capacity. This new facility will directly support the goals of the APC Recovery Plan (2010) by enabling the raising of more APCs in captivity. This increased capacity will, in turn, provide a greater number of birds for annual release, crucial for the species’ long-term survival and recovery.

| Description: | The Attwater¿s prairie chicken (APC) is a critically endangered grouse found in the coastal prairie of Texas. Currently, fewer than 50 birds exist at three locations. Efforts to propagate and release APCs into the wild have been ongoing since 1992 and 1996, respectively. In an effort to attain the goals established in the APC Recovery Plan (2010), captive breeding needs to be increased to provide more birds for release. This new, dedicated facility will increase the number of APCs raised in captivity, thus providing more birds for release annually. |
