The Phoenix Area Office is offering this grant for a pilot study on bat foraging behavior. This grant aims to determine if bats selectively forage within mesquite bosques during peak flowering on the 7B Ranch during spring and summer 2010. The study will primarily use acoustic sampling, with optional limited mist netting. Acoustic sampling in adjacent riparian and upland areas is also required to assess habitat availability and selective utilization. This pilot effort should be concise. Positive results from this program could lead to further funding opportunities in 2011.

Description: | Design and conduct a pilot study during the spring and summer of 2010 to determine whether bats selectively forage over/within mesquite bosques during periods of peak flowering by mesquite on the 7B Ranch (a map of the area will be provided in the full announcement). The pilot study is to be based on acoustic sampling but the proposal may include some limited mist netting. It is anticipated that some acoustic sampling will be required in adjacent riparian and upland areas to get at the question of habitat availability and selective utilization. However, the level of effort should be consistent with a pilot study. Based on the results of this pilot study, additional funding may be made available in 2011. |
