This grant aims to significantly advance waterbird conservation across the Americas. It focuses on synthesizing existing national waterbird reports from Central and South America into comprehensive regional documents. These syntheses will provide a crucial foundation for regional conservation actors to align understanding, agree on common goals, build collaborations, and develop effective projects. Furthermore, the grant supports a vital waterbird and shorebird conservation initiative in Barbados. This project involves establishing “no-shooting” wetlands and developing conservation agreements with swamp owners to enhance survival prospects for migratory shorebirds. All planned activities, encompassing regional syntheses and the Barbados initiative, are slated for completion within one year of funding.

| Description: | National waterbird reports have been created for all the nations of the Central America and South America, including species occurrence and status, important sites and habitats and their status, threats, relevant legislation, conservation activities and groups. These reports also forward recommendations regarding activities necessary to secure or restore waterbird populations. There is a need for comprehensive syntheses of the national reports by region, formalized and distributed, for the express purpose of providing a foundation upon which conservation actors at the regional scale can come to a common understanding, agree upon goals, build collaborations, and develop projects. This project involves the development of comprehensive syntheses for Central America nations (as a region) and South American nations (as one or more regions, to be determined during the course of the syntheses). The existing national waterbird reports will form the basis of the synthesis, though additional information may be sought from national contacts as appropriate. Outputs will include PDF files of documents, in appropriate languages, formatted for ease-of-use by conservation partners. This project also involves providing support to a particular waterbird/shorebird conservation project in Barbados. The numbers of shorebirds using the shooting swamps on Barbados is unknown, but it exceeds shorebird numbers for any other Caribbean island. As a result of targeted advocacy and discussion, a number of the shooting swamp owners are interested in managing areas as “no-shooting” wetlands and in establishing bag limits for the species of concern. Building on the conservation interest expressed by these swamp owners, the Barbados project will ensure that the survival prospects for visiting migratory shorebirds are significantly increased as a result of the establishment of no-shooting wetlands and the development of conservation agreements with existing shooting swamps. Timetable for all of the above tasks is I year after receipt of funds. There is no full announcement associated with this opportunity. |
