This NIH grant is for the purpose of inviting investigator-initiated applications to conduct basic, clinical, translational, epidemiological, and behavioral research on vulvodynia and related chronic pelvic pain conditions in women. The goal is to facilitate new research into diagnostic, prevention, and therapeutic approaches for vulvodynia. This initiative aims to increase understanding of its pathophysiology, biological and behavioral risk factors, natural history, and genetics. By fostering novel scientific ideas, model systems, and technologies through the R21 mechanism, the expected outcome is to provide findings useful for developing future prevention or treatment strategies, thereby substantially advancing biomedical research in this area.

| Description: | Purpose. The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to invite investigator-initiated applications that address basic, clinical, translational, epidemiological and/or behavioral research on vulvodynia and related symptom-based conditions. The goal of the initiative is to facilitate new research on diagnostic, prevention, and therapeutic approaches to vulvodynia, a chronic pelvic pain condition in women. An expected outcome will be to provide findings useful for development of future prevention or treatment strategies. It is anticipated that these studies will increase our understanding of the pathophysiology, biologic and behavioral risk factors, natural history, and genetics of vulvodynia. By using the R21 grant mechanism, the NIH seeks to foster the introduction of novel scientific ideas, model systems, tools, agents, targets, and technologies that have the potential to substantially advance biomedical research. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will use the NIH Exploratory/Developmental (R21) award mechanism and runs in parallel with a FOA of identical scientific scope, PAR-10-190, that encourage applications under the R01 traditional research grant mechanism, and PAR-10-191 that encourage applications under the R03 Small Research Grant mechanism. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend upon the mechanism numbers, quality, duration, and costs of the applications received. |
