The National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) is offering the Minor Crop Pest Management Program (IR-4) grant. This grant aims to ensure safe, effective, and economical crop protection products are accessible to growers and consumers of minor and specialty crops. The crop protection industry often faces economic hurdles, as the limited market base for these crops makes extensive research, development, and registration costs financially unviable. The IR-4 program bridges this gap by providing essential assistance, fostering the development of new and improved protection solutions. This initiative relies on robust collaborations between federal agencies, the crop protection industry, and land-grant universities. NIFA anticipates funding five projects: one national headquarters and four geographically-based regional IR-4 centers.

| Description: | The purpose of the IR-4 program is to enable the crop protection industry to provide safe, effective, and economical crop protection products for growers and consumers of minor/specialty crops. The crop protection industry cannot justify the costs associated with the research and development, registration, production, and marketing of crop protection products for minor/specialty crops due to the smaller market base and limited sales potential. The IR-4 program provides the assistance needed to ensure that new and more effective crop protection products are developed and made available to minor/specialty crop producers. These efforts require effective collaborations among federal agencies, the crop protection industry, and land-grant colleges and universities. In FY 2013 NIFA anticipates funding five projects: one to establish a national headquarters and four to establish geographically-based regional IR-4 centers. |

| Description: | The primary goal of the IR-4 program is to provide safe, effective and economical pest management solutions for growers of minor/specialty crops. IR-4 facilitates crop protection by providing expert assistance with product development and registration. IR-4 positively impacts the ability of research and extension personnel, producers, grower organizations, and others to provide a continuous supply of affordable minor/specialty crops to the public. IR-4 is the only publicly supported research program in the United States that provides this service. Successful applicants will demonstrate the capacity and commitment required to accelerate the registration of newer, reduced risk pest management tools; expedite access to these pest management tools for minor/specialty crop growers, and conduct efficacy research to identify new and more effective minor/specialty crop pest management solutions. The FY 2013 IR-4 Program will fund four geographically-based IR-4 Regional Centers and an IR-4 National Headquarters. |
