The Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center (NOROCK) is offering this grant to research climate change impacts on Rocky Mountain tailed frog (Ascaphus montanus) populations. This grant utilizes field studies, laboratory experiments, and genetic techniques. Its purpose is to explore how increased stream temperatures affect larval growth, body condition, and survival, and to identify local adaptation to thermal regimes. The project will also determine genetic variation, connectivity, and effective population size within and between populations, particularly in Glacier National Park. This initiative provides critical data for informed natural resource management decisions regarding these vulnerable amphibians.

Description: | The Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center (NOROCK) is offering a funding opportunity to for a combination of field studies, laboratory experiments and genetic techniques to provide critical information for assessing the threat of climate change on the Rocky Mountain tailed frog (Ascaphus montanus) populations in Glacier National Park and elsewhere in the Northern Rocky Mountains. Specifically, to explore how increased stream temperatures may affect growth, body condition and survival of the A. montanus larvae. Also to look at whether there is local adaptation to different thermal regimes within and among populations. In addition, determine levels of genetic variation and connectivity within and between streams and to estimate effective population size.
NOROCK conducts research in support of natural resources management in the mountains and plains of Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and Idaho. The Center produces and disseminates scientific information needed for decision-making in collaboration with Federal and State land management agencies, Native American tribes, academic institutions and organizations. Since 2001, NOROCK has funded projects that advance the Center in producing strong and unbiased scientific information necessary for decision making. The Center will continue to support such projects. |
