The National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR) is offering this grant through its Rehabilitation Engineering Research Centers (RERC) Program. This grant is for the purpose of improving the effectiveness of services for people with disabilities by conducting advanced engineering research and developing innovative technologies. The focus is on creating new products, devices, and technological advances designed to solve rehabilitation problems, remove environmental barriers, and enhance rehabilitation services in clinical or community settings. NIDILRR seeks to fund research and development leading to technologies and practices that improve health, physical, cognitive, sensory, and communication abilities. Successful projects will also demonstrate and evaluate these innovations, facilitate service delivery changes, stimulate private sector production, and provide training opportunities over a 60-month project period.

Description: | The purpose of the RERC program is to improve the effectiveness of services authorized under the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended, by conducting advanced engineering research on and development of innovative technologies that are designed to solve particular rehabilitation problems or to remove environmental barriers for people with disabilities. RERCs also demonstrate and evaluate such technologies, facilitate service delivery system changes, stimulate the production and distribution of new technologies and equipment in the private sector, and provide training opportunities. In this field-initiated area of “Strategies, Techniques, and Interventions,” NIDILRR seeks to fund research and development that leads to rehabilitation technologies, practices, and services that improve the health, and the physical, cognitive, sensory, and communication abilities of people with a wide range of disabling conditions. Rehabilitation engineering in this area should result in new or improved products, devices, and technological advances that enhance rehabilitation services in clinical or community settings. Grants will have a 60-month project period with five 12-month budget periods. |
