The Bureau of Reclamation is offering financial assistance to the Lewiston Orchards Irrigation District (LOID) to undertake a pilot project. This grant is for designing and constructing a well field alternative as a new water supply. The core purpose is to exchange a portion of the Lewiston Orchards Project’s current surface water source for groundwater from the new well. This exchange aims to partially resolve impacts on endangered steelhead and their habitat caused by existing surface withdrawals for irrigation. This initiative will contribute to significant habitat improvements within the Lapwai Basin, directly benefiting endangered steelhead populations in Sweetwater, Webb, and Lapwai Creeks.
