This grant from the Health Research Department aims to address the critical challenge of poor HIV care outcomes among adolescents globally. Differentiated care (DC), defined as client-centered approaches that simplify and adapt HIV services, offers significant promise in meeting the unique needs of adolescents living with HIV (ALWH) and simultaneously reducing burdens on healthcare systems. While DC has shown effectiveness for stable adult populations, primarily in high-prevalence settings, there is a notable lack of programs specifically targeting ALWH despite recent data supporting such approaches. This initiative seeks to expand and rigorously adapt differentiated care models to enhance health outcomes and optimize service delivery for adolescents living with HIV, thereby filling a crucial programmatic and research gap in global health efforts.

| Description: | Adolescents have some of the poorest outcomes along the HIV care continuum around the world. Differentiated care or differentiated service delivery has great promise to meet the needs of adolescents living with HIV and reduce unnecessary burdens on the healthcare system. Differentiated care or differentiated service delivery is defined as client-centered approaches that simplify and adapt HIV services across the care continuum, in ways that both better serve the needs of adolescents living with HIV and reduce unnecessary burdens on the health system. Most of the data on differentiated care has been limited to ART delivery for stable adults in high-prevalence settings in sub-Saharan Africa. A recent supplement to the Journal of the International AIDS Society on differentiated care and HIV provides data to support these new approaches to providing care to PLHIV; however, programs rarely target the unique needs of ALWH. |
