This grant supports vital research focusing on the non-breeding season behavior and demography of Island Scrub-Jays. Its primary purpose is to generate critical data to inform the conservation status of this USFWS Bird of Conservation species. The insights gained from this project will guide appropriate management actions to protect and increase the Island Scrub-Jay population, significantly reducing its extinction vulnerability. Stabilizing the population and mitigating threats could ultimately lead to the species’ removal from the Bird of Conservation list, thereby addressing OMB performance measures.

Description: | The objective for the 2010 fall field work is to continue research focused on the non-breeding season behavior and demography of Island Scrub-Jays. This project will benefit the public by generating data that provides insight into the conservation status of a species listed as a USFWS Bird of Conservation (BCC 2008). Resulting data will lead to appropriate management actions to protect and increase the Island Scrub-Jay population with the goal of reducing the species vulnerability to extinction. By stabilizing the scrub-jay population and implementing management actions to reduce threats, the Island Scrub-Jay could be removed from the BCC list and thus address OMB performance measures. |
