The University of Montana is offering this grant to develop a comprehensive meta-analytic model to quantify the economic value of visitation across the entire National Park System. This grant is for synthesizing existing willingness-to-pay (WTP) estimates from 25 park-specific studies, along with 52 unique estimates from the Duffield, Neher and Patterson (2010) analysis. The objective is to establish system-wide visitor valuation metrics that can parallel the agency’s MGM regional economic modeling efforts. Future efforts will integrate original site-specific data, such as from VSP surveys, to refine these predictions. Additionally, the project will utilize available data from VSP, NPS Fee-Demo, and the 2005 Yellowstone NP visitor surveys to critically compare and inform travel cost and contingent valuation models, enhancing understanding of visitor economics.

Description: | THIS IS A NOTICE OF INTENT ONLY. Develop a meta-analytic model of NPS visitor values based on both the previously existing 25 park-specific WTP estimates and the additional unique 52 park specific estimates from the Duffield, Neher and Patterson (2010) analysis. Apply meta-analytical methods to develop system-wide visitor valuation estimates for all units in the National Park System. This WTP visitor valuation system would parallel the agency’s comprehensive MGM regional economic modeling effort. Park-specific WTP results based on model prediction would gradually be replaced by estimates based on site-specific original data as available, for example from improvements to the VSP surveys or other original valuation efforts.Use available data from the VSP surveys, the NPS Fee-Demo surveys and the 2005 Yellowstone NP visitor survey to compare and inform travel cost and contingent valuation models. |
