This grant is for continuing Western Snowy Plover recovery efforts along the Oregon coast, as outlined in recovery plans. The primary purpose is to monitor plover abundance and distribution, locate nests, and implement predator exclosures to minimize nest failure from predation and human disturbance. Activities include determining nesting and fledging success, assisting federal and state agencies with seasonal area closures, and coordinating with predator management personnel. The grant also supports evaluating the effectiveness of predator control activities on reproductive success and providing essential information to cooperators and the public, contributing significantly to the plover’s conservation.

Description: | Continue snowy plover recovery tasks as identified in the Western Snowy Plover Recovery Plan (USFWS 2007) and the Oregon Conservation Program for the Western Snowy Plover (ODFW 1994), as well as to evaluate results of predator control activities on snowy plover reproductive success. Field objectives include daily monitoring of the abundance and distribution of snowy plovers along the Oregon coast; locating nests and erecting predator exclosures around nests to minimize nest failure due to predation and human disturbance as needed; determine nesting success; monitor chick broods to determine movements and fledging success; assist Federal and State management agencies with signs and ropes, as requested, to direct people away from seasonally closed areas; alert predator management personnel to plover breeding and observed predator activities to increase effectiveness of the program; and provide information to cooperators and the public during the field season as time allows. |
