The Service-Tribal Landowner Incentive Project is offering this grant to create and enhance critical habitats for roundtail chub on the Navajo River. The project incorporates engineered plans to narrow the active channel, deepen existing and create new pools, and build complex habitat structures using large boulders and root wads. It will also improve side-channel and backwater functionality. Building on the Jicarilla Apache Nation’s 2009 success, which restored half a mile of the Navajo River via a similar grant, this initiative seeks to complete two additional miles of comprehensive habitat work, significantly improving ecological conditions for the species.
