This Bureau of Reclamation grant is for conducting a study to understand the effects of food limitation on the reproductive output of delta smelt. The project aims to provide critical insights into how food availability impacts the species’ ability to reproduce. Key objectives include monitoring fish rearing based on food ration and fecundity, analyzing the histological staging and hormones in delta smelt, and examining the otoliths, or ‘ear-bones,’ during spawning events. This research will contribute valuable data essential for informed management and conservation strategies concerning delta smelt populations within the Central Valley Project area.
