Description:: he Maui Invasive Species Committee (MISC) is a voluntary partnership of state, federal and private agencies united to protect Maui, Molokai, and Lanai from the most harmful invasive plants and animals that threaten our environment, economy, and human health. They are the de facto group that deals with incipient invasive species on public and private lands and they have the unique qualifications, technical expertise and infrastructure to deal with early detection and rapid response issues. They receive a majority of their funding from the State of Hawaii to carry out invasive species control.
Invasive Species Committees represent a unique and innovative approach to dealing with incipient species in the State of Hawaii. This was an unsolicited proposal and the Pacific Islands Fish and Wildlife Office has deemed that supporting this project is advantageous to the offices strategic conservation objectives in dealing with invasive species threats for the recovery of endangered and threatened species in the State of Hawaii. This is a continuation of project support of which the Service has supported in prior years in order for MISC to effectively continue working on existing invasive species control projects on the islands of Maui, Molokai, and Lanai.
