The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) is offering this planning grant to State and local jurisdictions struggling with a backlog of untested sexual assault kits (SAKs). This grant is for the first phase of an action research project designed to deeply understand the underlying issues causing these large quantities of untested SAKs. Recipients will conduct an initial assessment of their specific problem and develop a comprehensive working plan for implementing sustainable solutions in the project’s subsequent phase. The purpose of this study is to identify effective strategies to manage and resolve the challenge of untested SAK evidence, ultimately leading to improved justice processes.
