This grant is for the purpose of ensuring long-term water security and improving public health by supporting the completion of the Navajo Gallup Water Supply System (NGWSP). Once completed, the NGWSP will deliver a reliable municipal, industrial, and domestic water supply to critical areas including Navajo Nation communities in New Mexico, the City of Gallup, Window Rock and Fort Defiance Arizona, the Navajo Agricultural Products Industry, and parts of the Jicarilla Apache Nation. This vital infrastructure project addresses the current reliance on a rapidly depleting groundwater supply, which is of poor quality and entirely inadequate to meet the current and future water needs of these communities.
