The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology (S&T) Directorate is offering this grant to advance biometrics science and technology through cross-discipline research. This grant aims to significantly improve the performance or application of biometrics, which are methods for automatic individual recognition based on unique physical or behavioral traits. Traditionally, biometrics research has been within information technology, but this solicitation specifically encourages new cross-discipline collaboration to achieve breakthroughs. Proposals are sought to enhance biometrics in DHS’s mission and operations. Key research areas include the role of human identity in security, the acceptability and usability of biometrics in DHS applications, the forensic proof of automated biometric systems, and the acquisition of useful biometric samples regardless of environment.
