Additional Information

Agency Name: Dept. of the Army — USAMRAA
Description: Military personnel who suffer from Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs) face an increased risk for developing several long-term health problems. These conditions include Alzheimer’s-like dementia, aggression, memory loss, depression, and symptoms similar to those of other neurological diseases. Research funded through the FY13 Military Risk Factors Research Award (MRFA) Program Announcement/Funding Opportunity is intended to facilitate high-impact, systematic, population-based, research into the association between TBI and the subsequent development of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). This announcement seeks applications which will work with well-defined, already identified, study cohorts. Studies should demonstrate how they will characterize the association of TBI and subsequent AD. As part of the application, applicants should carefully consider how their studies will characterize the cognitive and behavioral symptoms that result in functional impairments in the proposed cohort. Studies that use combinations of measures (e.g., neuropsychological assessments, imaging, genomics, and cerebral spinal fluid) are encouraged. Investigators should consider developing interdisciplinary teams or consortia as part of the support plan for executing the research. The research impact is intended to benefit the military community, while also meeting a public purpose for the benefit of the civilian community.
