The Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit (CESU) is offering this grant to develop an integrated 2D/3D seismic-reflection model for Miami-Dade County, Florida. This grant aims to map seismic horizons, faults, karst features, porosity, and the probability of vertical fluid migration, with product quality contingent on data acquisition and processing. The 3D seismic model will be integrated into geomodels and groundwater-flow simulations. Its primary purpose is to evaluate the risk of vertical upward migration of wastewater, injected into the lower Floridan Aquifer System, into the upper FAS brackish drinking-water supply zones, safeguarding regional water resources.

Description: | The overarching objective of this research is the integration of several scientific disciplines to develop an integrated 2D/3D seismic-reflection model that contains the mapping of seismic horizons, faults, karst features, and porosity, and the spatial distribution the probability of vertical fluid migration throughout much of the Miami-Dade County, Florida area. The quality of these products, especially porosity, is contingent on data acquisition geometry and data quality, and processing quality. The 3D seismic-reflection model will be produced so that it can be exported into a 3D geomodel, which in turn can be exported into groundwater-flow simulations to evaluate the risk of vertical upward migration of wastewater that has been injected into the lower part of the FAS into brackish water drinking-water supply zones in the upper FAS. |
