The Department of Energy (DOE) is offering this grant to fund competitive, cost-shared applications for small-scale CO2 injection field projects. This grant is for conducting tests within various geologic reservoir classes, including conventional and unconventional systems, with a focus on infrastructure elements that improve CO2 storage efficiency and safety. Projects aim to demonstrate the potential for CO2 storage sites to safely, permanently, and economically store regional CO2 emissions for hundreds of years, while also enhancing understanding of CO2 behavior and migration in different depositional environments. Applicants must propose at least one specific site, formation, or area not previously characterized. The DOE anticipates making approximately 8 to 15 awards to advance our understanding of these formations’ CO2 storage potential.

Description: | The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement DE-FE0000441 is to competitively seek (cost-shared) Applications to conduct small-scale CO2 injection field projects within various depositional systems in both conventional and unconventional reservoirs as defined in the recent DOE manual entitled Geologic Storage Formation Classification: Understanding Its Importance and Impacts on CCS Opportunities in the United States. This FOA will focus on infrastructure elements to improve efficiency and safe storage of CO2. Projects supported by this FOA will address small-scale CO2 injection projects of various depositional systems, within the infrastructure portfolio. These injection tests are intended to be designed to demonstrate that CO2 storage sites have the potential to store regional CO2 emissions safely, permanently, and economically for hundreds of years, and to understand CO2 behavior and migration in different depositional environments/ classes of reservoirs. Each application shall focus on a minimum of one specific site, formation, or area not previously characterized with an injection pilot test and based on publically available data, unless a strong case can be made for further characterization for deficiencies in the available data sets. It is anticipated that approximately 8 to 15 awards will be made and that these projects will increase our understanding of the potential for these formations to safely and permanently store CO2. |
