This grant, the Monkfish Research Set-Aside (RSA) Program, established by Amendment 2 to the Monkfish Fishery Management Plan, is designed to fund critical research enhancing understanding of the monkfish fishery resource and supporting management decisions. Annually, 500 monkfish DAS are set aside for this purpose. The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), in coordination with the Fishery Management Councils, invites proposals for the 2014 program. Priority research areas include monkfish life history (age, growth, reproduction, mortality), migration patterns, trophic interactions, cooperative surveys, bycatch and discard mortality, and gear studies focusing on selectivity and bycatch reduction, including protected species interactions. Successful projects will contribute vital information for the sustainable management of the monkfish fishery.
