This BJA grant is for the purpose of addressing the significant challenge of individuals returning to communities after incarceration. With over 2.3 million people in federal and state prisons, and millions more cycling through local jails annually, 95% of offenders will eventually be released. This initiative, authorized by Section 101 of the Second Chance Act of 2007, aims to facilitate a successful and safe transition from prison, jail, or juvenile residential facilities back into society. State and local governments, alongside federally recognized Indian tribes, can apply for these demonstration projects. The core objective is to promote the safe and successful reintegration of formerly incarcerated or detained individuals, thereby enhancing public safety and reducing recidivism.
