The BLM Monticello Field Office is offering this grant, in collaboration with the Colorado Plateau Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit, to introduce college-level students to careers within the Bureau of Land Management. This grant is for initiating the development of the San Juan River Management Plan, a key component of the 2008 Monticello Resource Management Plan. Students will gain practical experience in natural resource management by contributing to a detailed hierarchical framework for the plan. This includes conducting literature searches, estimating timelines and costs, identifying personnel needs, and assisting with inter-agency scoping for an integrated planning effort. The project aims to enhance students’ classroom learning, deepen their understanding of public lands, and foster interest in natural resource careers while accomplishing critical planning work.

| Description: | The Monticello Field Office has funding available to work with a partner under the Colorado Plateau Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit for the purpose of introducing college level students to a career in the BLM and accomplishing needed work. BLM is interested in working with college students to gain experience in the development of the San Juan River Management Plan. This project will enhance the student¿s classroom learning by providing them opportunities to gain experience, learn about public lands, further their understanding and appreciation of natural resources, and pique their interest in natural resource careers. The proposed project is to begin development of a San Juan River Management Plan. The Monticello Field Office is developing a detailed hierarchical framework for completing a set of management planning initiatives prescribed in the 2008 Monticello Resource Management Plan/Record of Decision. The Goal is to develop a conceptual framework that would identify the purpose/need and goals of an overarching, integrated planning effort. Elements will include a literature search of pertinent supporting documents (plans and references), a suggested sequence for completing plans, time and cost estimates, personnel needs, evaluation of opportunities and challenges, organization of an inter-disciplinary/interagency internal scoping meeting, and the production of a written pre-planning document. |
