The National Park Service, through Mount Rushmore National Memorial, offers a grant to study small mammal responses to fuels treatments. This project will assess species occurrence and abundance across Mount Rushmore, analyzing differences in unthinned, thinned/chipped, and thinned/piled/burned forests. It will also evaluate colonization and local extinction dynamics by integrating new data with pre-2010 fuels treatment information. A core objective is to collaboratively assess potential management implications with Mount Rushmore managers and NPS regional fire personnel, ensuring the research offers practical insights for future conservation and land management.

Additional Information
| Agency Name: | National Park Service |
| Description: | The objectives of this project are threefold. First, we will assess the current species occurrence and abundance of small mammals throughout MORU using parkwide sample of plots and to examine how these parameters vary among unthinned forests, those that underwent thinning and chipping treatments, and those that underwent thinning and piling/burning treatments. Second, species colonization/local extinction dynamics will be assessed by combining data with a similar data set conducted prior to 2010 fuels treatments. Third, based on these results, potential management implications will be assessed collaboratively with MORU managers and NPS regional fire managers/ecologists to maximize the practical value of the information |
