This grant is for the purpose of establishing a long-term, viable, world-class domestic manufacturer of high energy density lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries. These batteries are specifically designed to power various U.S. military assets, including long endurance Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), equipment for dismount soldiers, long endurance autonomous systems, and tactical vehicles. The project aims to ensure the manufacturer can meet customer requirements regarding performance, reliability, quality, delivery, and price. A key technical specification for the Li-ion cells of interest is an energy density of at least 250 Wh/kg at 250 W/kg continuous (1C rate) for these critical military applications.
