The National Park Service, in cooperation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, is offering this grant for the propagation and outplanting of the critically endangered Marsh Sandwort (Arenaria paludicola) at Golden Gate National Recreation Area. This grant is for establishing a new population near its historical range in San Francisco and gathering data to optimize reintroduction strategies across its entire range. Key activities involve harvesting existing plants, transporting them for propagation, and reintroducing them into the Recreation Area. Data will be collected on transplant success, and propagules will be maintained at multiple sites. Nopalito Native Plant Nursery’s participation focuses on short-term maintenance of existing plants and long-term care of specific genotypes to support this vital conservation effort.

Description: | In cooperation with the FWS, the Nopalito Native Plant Nursery will participate in the study entitled, Marsh Sandwort (Arenaria paludicola) propagation and outplanting at Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The project purpose is to establish a population of the critically endangered plant Arenaria paludicola near the historical population in San Francisco, California and to obtain data to determine the best strategy to introduce this species throughout its historical range. The overall project will include harvesting up to 2,500 existing Arenaria paludicola plants from a facility in Los Osos, California; transporting them to propagation facilities; reintroducing them to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area; collecting data on the success of transplanted propagules; and maintaining some propagules (up to 1,500) at multiple sites during the duration of the project. Nopalito Native Plant Nursery’s participation in this project will consist of 1) maintaining approximately 500 existing Arenaria paludicola plants that were transferred from San Luis Obispo County for a short period (4 to 12 weeks) and 2) maintaining propagules of the 11 known Arenaria paludicola genotypes in facilities in Ventura, CA for the duration of the project. |
