This grant is for the purpose of gaining a comprehensive understanding of seasonal habitat use and movements of migratory Westslope Cutthroat Trout (WCT) in the Canadian North Fork Flathead River. The study will assess WCT summer distribution, abundance, and size-class structure, along with determining spawning timing, location, and movements. Researchers will also identify crucial overwintering habitats and track fall/winter movements of juvenile and adult WCT using radio-telemetry. The combined data will be instrumental in identifying critical habitats within the Canadian portion of the upper Flathead River system. Ultimately, findings will inform conservation and management strategies for transboundary WCT populations, which are facing threats from invasive species, habitat loss, and climate warming.

| Description: | This synopsis is the full announcement. The goal of this study is to gain a better understanding of the seasonal habitat use and movements by migratory WCT in the North Fork Flathead River in Canada. Our objectives are to: (1) assess the summer distribution, abundance, and size-class structure of WCT in the mainstem and various tributaries of the Flathead River in Canada; (2) determine the timing, location and movements of spawning by radio-tagged WCT; (3) identify overwintering habitats and describe fall and winter movements of juvenile and adult WCT using radio-telemetry; and (4) use this combined information to identify critical habitats in the Canadian portion of the upper Flathead River system. Results of this study will be used to identify critical WCT habitats and life history strategies for conservation and management of transboundary populations threatened by invasive species, habitat loss, and the impending impacts of climate warming. |
